Scion Executive Search has been retained to conduct the search for a School Director for our client, Pacific Autism Center for Education (PACE). This is a full-time, on-site opportunity located in Santa Clara, CA!

ABOUT PACE:
PACE School is a non-profit, non-public school, certified by the California Department of Education and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. PACE School serves students ages 6-22 who live with moderate to severe autism, with a specific emphasis on non-verbal students and those with especially challenging behaviors and communication disorders.

PACE serves to enhance the lives of people impacted by autism through innovation, exceptional education, and compassionate care. They provide high quality programs for individuals with autism and/or developmental disabilities so that they may experience the satisfaction and fulfillment that accompany learning, self-expression, self-care, productive work, and interpersonal and community experiences. PACE provides for the educational and residential needs of individuals with autism and other developmental disorders.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The School Director has overall responsibility for the function, integrity, quality and compliance of the PACE School program. Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, the School Director maintains leadership over the school faculty comprised of Teachers, Teacher-Interns, Therapists (SLP/OT), and Behaviorists (BCBA). In this capacity, the School Director will also oversee the placement, training, and coordination of the Instruction Aide (IA) staff along with appropriate faculty training/education. 


The School Director is responsible for ensuring the compliance and quality of the PACE School program with industry best practice approaches to ensure optimal student academic, developmental and social emotional progress.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

School Program Services – The School Director’s primary role is providing solid program leadership and staff coordination to ensure the best quality of education for the students and their families.
  • Student Support – The School Director’s primary job is to establish and support a high-quality educational program to best serve the students attending the school. In the most general terms, this covers the administration of a daily schedule and calendar year program that covers appropriate adapted academic standards, developmental strategies for positive social & vocational outcomes with behavioral / skill / sensory management.
  • Program Promotion – Student enrollment, district standing, and parent/community outreach are critical to the ongoing success of PACE. This requires presenting to school Districts and potential students as well as engagement in parent/community outreach promoting the work of the PACE school.
  • Knowledgebase – The School Director should be an open resource to the school staff in developing proactive and individualized educational strategies for each student. This includes the design, implementation and feedback of student goals and methods of teaching with industry best practices. These methodologies should be routinely reviewed and enhanced with new educational training / tools.
  • Documentation – Effective data tracking and review is critically important for evidence-based progress. The School Director will ensure that all staff maintain thorough and accurate data collection forms that are appropriately reviewed for progress and program changes where necessary. Periodically review the data and consult with staff as necessary.
  • Classroom Support – Participate in weekly classroom team meetings to increase familiarity with classroom needs and be available for consultation. Participate in teacher / therapy meetings on a regular basis or when needed, to increase familiarity with the needs of the classroom and to provide academic / leadership consult to the team.
  • Teacher Review/Support – Assist Teachers in the development of classroom best practices to support high quality program plan delivery, staffing leadership and individualized student education.
  • Staff Support – Assist staff in achieving their assigned student’s goals through direct observation, ongoing individual staff training and teacher consultation. Maintain a supportive and active presence on the floor.
  • Safety – The School Director must routinely supervise school activities, hallway movement and classroom dynamics to ensure safety and promote appropriate staff interaction with students. This is especially relevant in ensuring safe transition support on morning arrivals and afternoon departures of students.

School Compliance – As a state-certified Non-Public School, PACE is required to maintain compliance with all components of CA Education Code which include the following:
  • Student Records – As the certified School Administrator, the School Director is responsible for the accuracy and efficacy of student progress in each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This includes meeting oversight and assurance of timely completion of the IEP.
  • Certifications – The School Director will also ensure that faculty and staff are appropriately certified and assigned to cover the services required in accordance with IEP.
  • Curriculum – The cornerstone of the education framework is the curriculum and how education concepts are taught, and progress assessed for each student. Curriculum must be approved by the CDE which is reviewed during the CDE on-site evaluation. Best practice ensures that the education curriculum consists of relevant data collection, routine review on academic progress and periodic overall assessment of curriculum design.

Related Services – The School Director is also the lead facilitator overseeing the assignments and delivery of related services which covers SLP, OT and Behavior Management resources.
  • Therapy Services – The School Director has the authority for caseload assignment for OT and SLP services. This includes the best effort to ensure optimal caseload service completion covering each student’s IEP. This role also covers team meetings for ongoing program development.
  • Behavior Support Services – This involves the overall setting of behavioral strategies and support to be delivered by the Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and the assigned Behavior Support Associates (BSA). While the role of behavior program delivery is the direct responsibility of the Behavior Analyst (BCBA), the School Director will ensure predictable and consistent behavior practices/training along with critical review of Special Incident Reports (SIR). The School Director maintains responsibility for approving any significant behavioral modification or corrective action, especially Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
  • Evaluations – The School Director will conduct random periodic site evaluations to support the ongoing supervision of therapists and behavior team members. This would roll up to the annual review for everyone typically conducted in the June/July time frame.

Staff Development – Provide training for staff on behavior management of the students.
  • Recruiting – The most important element of staffing is effective recruiting. The school Director is essential in the interviewing and placement of new school staff. This includes on-boarding follow-up to ensure staff are settling into their respective roles.
  • PACE Policies – Enforce PACE policies. Support management in ensuring that staff are knowledgeable and understand PACE policy. Ensure that all staff is clear on the program’s expectations of them through thorough communication.
  • Development Training – New hire training, behavior training, and crisis management are formal exercises that the School Director will be responsible for providing to staff in collaboration with teachers and BCBA staff members in order to promote well informed group, ensure the quality of the program, and safety at all times.
  • In-Service Training - The School Director is responsible for the development of an annual training program for monthly in-services and weekly training programs which includes a master education/training plan with appropriate measures for fidelity feedback and follow through. As a collaborative effort, content may be led or facilitated by the Director, BCBAs, HR and guest speakers.
  • Reviews & Corrective Action – The School Director is responsible for reviewing all direct reports and indirectly overseeing the reviews of secondary staff. Where necessary, the School Director will participate in any corrective action process warranted for performance improvement.
  • Professional Leadership – The School Director must set the highest standard for appropriate professional conduct through leadership by example. This is particularly important when establishing a culture of inclusion, diversity, non-favoritism, equal opportunity, and opportunity investment in staffing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS:
  • A bachelor's degree is required, and a master's is preferred. PACE is offering Master’s degree support for those interested in seeking additional education during employment.
  • 1-2+ years teaching experience serving individuals impacted by moderate to severe autism is preferred.
  • 10+ years teaching special education in a classroom, preferably working with autistic or developmentally disabled students.
  • Either hold a CA Administrator Credentialing, or willing to obtain the credential through PACE’s sponsorship.
  • Must have an active Teacher's Credential in CA or be able to update it.
  • Proof of a valid first aid and CPR certification from The American Red Cross and maintain this certificate in good standing.
  • Must have a clear physical health and TB test prior to employment and routinely during employment as required.
  • Must possess and maintain a clear DOJ and FBI clearance prior to and during employment.
  • Capable of passing the Safety Care physical behavior management requirements.
  • Demonstrate the ability to network and build community.
  • Bear emotional intelligence, providing empathy and continuous staff support.
  • Can thrive in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Experience with financial budgets to recognize the basic financial considerations of the school operation and take on approving purchases for the school program.
  • Resourceful in finding appropriate assistance to make accommodations for disabled individuals to ensure access to the organization’s services (may include visitors, employees, or others).
  • Showcases the ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
  • Finds pleasure in working with others and relating to people effectively.
  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be willing to attend to emergency issues when warranted outside of working hours.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Is knowledgeable of and can implement appropriate Safety Care techniques for behavior management crises when needed.
  • Ability to physically drive to and from a variety of PACE locations.
  • Capable of conducting a variety of office work.
The School Director’s job performance will be measured by his/her effectiveness in managing the overall effectiveness of the school program through objective: (i.e.. data/goal progress) subjective: (ie. staff 360-degree reviews) criteria: Student Progress, Staff Development, Leadership, and Strategic Planning.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: 
The salary range for this opportunity is $130,000 -$160,000 and offers a competitive benefits package. The Director position is eligible for paid school closure periods, school holidays, paid sick time, and paid vacation. As a full-time exempt employee, you would be offered: health, dental, pharmaceutical, and vision coverage, long-term disability insurance and AD&D coverage, EAP, a 403(b)-retirement plan with 5% match upon vesting, and other voluntary plans, and other voluntary plans.
